The International Council on Mining and Minerals (ICMM) is an international organisation that brings together mining and metals companies and commodity associations, with the aim of improving the sustainable development of the mining and metals industry. ICMM expects a target of No Net Loss of Biodiversity from its members.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The commitment entails, among other things, that ICMM member companies shall contribute to a nature-positive future in line with the Kunming-Montreal framework. It also involves avoiding world heritage sites and respecting designated natural areas, as well as applying the mitigation hierarchy with the aim of not causing any net loss of biodiversity. <\/p>\n\n\n

UEPG, the European Aggregates Association, is the trade association of the European materials industry. The organisation has initiated the Biodiversity Task Force.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Through the biodiversity task force, UEPG highlights opportunities to promote biodiversity in quarry sites. The initiative raises awareness of nature and biodiversity, and showcases good practices.<\/p>\n\n\n

Research shows a steady increase in No-Net-Loss commitments from companies in a variety of industries. The mining and minerals industry are clearly represented.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the results showed that only a few of these targets were clear, with science-based criteria to monitor against. The researchers conclude that the impact of the targets is unclear and biodiversity targeting could be developed by linking them more clearly to business risks and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs.)<\/p>\n

The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) has developed a comprehensive framework around several aspects of sustainability; Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM). TSM is a recognised sustainability framework used in several countries, including Finland and Norway. Part of the framework focuses on biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies joining the TSM Protocol commit to overall commitments within each protocol, as well as to reporting the company’s overall and site-specific performance according to the indicators in each protocol. The outcome of the reporting grades the companies’ performance, on a scale from C to AAA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
