Green-blue Infrastructure

At the landscape level, the location of ecosystems in relation to each other is important for viable ecosystems. For individuals of different species to move across the landscape, green-blue infrastructure, i.e. networks of ecosystems through which species of different kinds can move, is needed. This is crucial for the ability of many species to find food and reproduce. It also enables genetic exchange between different groups.

The networks of green-blue infrastructure have been split up, fragmented by human impact, such as infrastructure, hydroelectric power plants, farmland and cities. This has cut off many ecosystems and made it difficult for species to move around the landscape. Biodiversity can thus benefit from the strengthening of green-blue infrastructure.
