Nature Dependencies in Different Sectors
Biodiversity work often focuses on the operational impacts on biodiversity. A very clear trend is that the focus is now increasingly on dependencies of biodiversity. Internationally, the term ”dependent on nature” is often used.
To focus on dependency is to ask: What happens if nature stops delivering? How will our operations be affected if water dries up or plants fail? By identifying the dependence of businesses on nature, the issue of biodiversity becomes relevant in a different way for many businesses. It becomes a question of being able to continue to operate – not of complying with conditions.
Nature dependencies by industry
The World Economic Forum and PwC, in their report “Nature Risk Rising: Why the Crisis Engulfing Nature Matters for Business and the Economy” from 2020, have identified nature dependencies by industry, both directly and in the value chain. The graph below illustrates the nature dependency of several industries, both directly and in the value chain.
