The EU Green Deal

The EU Green Deal is one of the European Commission’s six priorities for 2019-2024, with the aim of making the EU the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

The aim of the EU Green Deal is to:

  • Transition to a clean, circular economy
  • Restore biodiversity and reduce pollution

What is the EU Green Deal?

  • A strengthening of the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets
  • A growth strategy to shift to a modern, resource-efficient economy
  • A roadmap and actions in several areas
  • Part of the EU’s strategy to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

The EU Green Deal comprises 11 thematic areas and an action plan. Restoring lost biodiversity and reducing pollution is an important part of the Green Deal.

The 11 thematic areas are:

  • Preserving and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity
  • Shifting to clean energy
  • Climate action
  • Efficient, safe and environmentally friendly transport
  • Industry to promote a clean and circular economy
  • Zero emission vision for a toxic-free environment
  • Ensuring a fair transition for all
  • Financing green initiatives
  • Building and renovating in an energy and resource efficient way
  • Leading the green transition globally
  • From farm to fork: a fair, healthy and environmentally friendly food system
