New Global Goal

The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) decided on the new global goals for biodiversity during the 15th Conference of the Parties, in December 2022. The hope is that these new goals will be as unifying as the 1.5-degree goal for climate change.

The vision established in the framework is to create a world living in harmony with nature by 2050. One of the key goals to reach the vision is to protect 30 percent of the Earth’s surface, both on land and water, by 2030.

The new goals include a greater focus on measurability than the previous global biodiversity goals.

There is also a much clearer expectation on businesses to contribute to the sucsess, in the same way as for the climate goals. This is formulated in target 15.

Leading scientists and business stakeholders’ input to the CBD ahead of the COP was that, in order to avoid major risks, society needs to reach:

  • No Net Loss from 2020
  • Net Gain from 2030
