Mining environments and Quarries Can Have High Conservation Values
Mines and quarries are an intrusion into nature. Nevertheless, quarries can have many high conservation values since they create environments that are otherwise rare in the landscape. They can provide suitable habitats for certain insects, amphibians, plants and even nesting birds.
This creates opportunities for the mining and minerals industry to enhance these habitats. Some examples of measures that make a difference:
- Creating small water bodies, ponds or brooks.
- Preserving natural habitats as much as possible in industrial areas.
- Avoiding impacts on nearby natural habitats, e.g. by minimizing industrial dust.
- Creating meadows in industrial areas and around office buildings.
- Preserving fine-grained waste slopes that can become breeding habitats for sand martins.
- Preserving rock shelves that can become nesting sites for birds of prey.
- Create and conserve steep slopes and rock walls with varied structure instead of a smooth ledge. This benefits the habitats of several species and thus biodiversity.
