Key Species

Some species play a key role in ecosystems. They are called key species. Key species interact directly or indirectly with many other species in the ecosystem. If a key species declines or disappears, many other species are also negatively affected.

When this happens, there are large multilevel effects, called cascade effects. Overall, the impact on the ecosystem can be severe!

Woodpeckers create nesting sites for many other birds and mammals. If the woodpecker declines, other birds and animals will have a harder time.

The goat willow, which flowers in early spring, provides important food for many insects, which in turn become food for birds.
