Types of Ecosystem Services

There are different types of ecosystem services, some more visible than others. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Ecosystem Services (IPBES) defines 18 different types of natural benefits, i.e. ecosystem services.

Ecosystem services are usually divided into 4 main groups: provisioning, regulating, cultural and supporting.

  • The most obvious ecosystem services are the provisioning ones, which give us food, water and commodities.
  • Plants that bind moisture and stabilise the soil, thus protecting against landslides and flooding in the event of heavy rainfall, are examples of regulating ecosystem services.
  • Cultural ecosystem services are the values we humans experience when we spend time in nature.
  • At the core are the supporting ecosystem services, important ecosystem functions that underpin all other ecosystem services.
