Science Based Targets For Nature
The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) is an international coalition of organizations supporting companies in setting and achieving science based targets. The Science Based Target Initiative for climate has become the Gold Standard for corporate climate goals.
Science Based Targets for Nature (SBTN) is a sister framework focusing on nature and biodiversity. It represents another example of how environmental issues are expanding to include biodiversity. SBTN, which launched its first guidance in 2020, is based on the five drivers of biodiversity loss identified by IPBES in its 2019 research synthesis.
SBTN:s model focuses on identifying actions sufficient to stay within the limits of what the planet can bear, i.e., what is required to achieve long-term sustainability. SBTN entails companies setting goals to reduce their ecological footprint, protect endangered species and ecosystems, and promote biodiversity. The framework emphasizes that scientific goals should be measurable, actionable, and time-bound, encompassing relevant parts of the value chain (upstream, direct, and downstream). SBTN consists of five steps:
- Assess
- Interpret & Prioritize
- Measure, Set & Disclose
- Act
- Track
The framework is under development, and companies can engage and provide valuable input through SBTN:s Corporate Engagement Program.
