Increased Societal Support

Today, there is a lack of support for the mining and mineral industry in parts of society. This may be because of the way the mining and minerals industry have dealt with environmental issues in the past, or because the type of land that the mining and minerals industry claim may have high values for other interests.

It may also be because a mine or quarry involves a visible and often large-scale land transformation, while the benefits of the activities to society are less obvious. In order to merit the support of society, it is important to demonstrate both the benefits that the products create, but also the social benefits that arise from the way the activities are conducted and completed.

Some of the keys to increased acceptance are:

  • Involve interest organizations and local operators in finding solutions to achieve increased biodiversity values.
  • Transparently accounting for and reporting the results of measures taken by the industry to reduce its environmental impact.
  • Make clear how the results of sustainability efforts in the sector contribute to global, European and national sustainability goals.
